Fort McMurray, Alberta — David Yurdiga, Member of Parliament for Fort McMurray – Cold Lake and the Official Opposition Critic for Northern Affairs, today expressed his disappointment with Employment Minister MaryAnn Mihychuk’s comments that “you don’t have to pay tax usually if you’re up North.”  He issued the following statement:

“Such comments demonstrate a fundamental misunderstanding about Northern issues by Liberal Ministers. It is concerning that anyone in the Liberal Government would believe that Northerners, whether Inuit, Métis, First Nations, or otherwise do not pay taxes.

“This is just one example of how out of touch the Liberal Government is with Northerners. If the Liberal Government doesn’t believe that the people in the North work hard to provide for their families, just like their Southern counterparts, it’s no wonder they don’t have a Northern Plan.

“This Government needs to stop relying on photo ops and empty rhetoric and start focusing on building a strong Northern Canada.”
